Baruntse 2009

Our expedition timeline begins when we leave Denver, Co. on 4/12/2009 and fly to Katmandhu, Nepal arriving on 4/14/2009. We will spend the first two days jet lagged and ensuring the arrival of our cargo and then will fly to Tumlingtar Nepal, our initial access point to the remote Makalu Barun region.

Our crew of three climbers will ascend a hiking trail that begins below treeline and will spend up to 9 days climbing to our 17,600′ basecamp on the lower Barun glacier below the Eastern face of Baruntse. Our plan is to enjoy the scenery in basecamp for a few days before embarking on what is an unprecedented adventure.

Pioneering the Himalaya in it’s contemporary form has many definitions, often based on individual journeys, stories and goals. Our expedition travel is conducted in a style known as Alpine style. Climbers who utilize Alpine style are self reliant and use minimal equipment on the upper mountain eschewing the services of porters or sherpa above basecamp. Our team covers ground in a way that mixes skill and adventure; we climb mixed rock and ice on the upper mountain and then we ski off the summit down a different side. Our goal is to be as environmentally sound and low impact as possible, we do not leave camps, ropes or trash on the mountain.

On this particular expedition, we will also be traversing the mountain and the lines we are choosing for our ascent and descent have never been climbed or skied. This team is the first to implement an adventurous and technical plan of this kind in the Himalaya and on Baruntse! That’s a big part of what we enjoy so much about it; we are constantly encountering new experiences.
